Writing/Concepts of Print
Journals: Use Uppercase and Lowercase Letters Correctly
- Understand that writers use an uppercase letter at the beginning of a sentence and for the pronoun I
- Understand that writers use lowercase letters for other words in a sentence
- Write CVC and high-frequency words
Writing Prompts:
- Monday: weekend update (share what you did over the weekend)
- Tuesday: write and draw about a tree in the winter
- Wednesday: Draw and write about a time you figured out how to do something on your own
- Thursday: Draw and write about how we use different senses.
- Friday: Free write! (students choose what they write about)
Language Arts Home Practice Lesson 5.2 (COMING SOON!) (Will come home on Friday, February 5th in Friday Folders. We send home the practice sheets after we have worked on the content in class.)

Centers this week include:
Read to Self: . Students choose books from their personalized book bags. Students read books based on their specific reading level, although some books are slightly above and some are slightly below. These books are updated every 1-2 weeks. Students also work in guided reading groups with Mr. Thorpe
iPad Read to Self/Read to Others: students use Raz Kids to listen to a story, read a story, and answer comprehensive questions about the story. Students can also read a story with their partner or on their own. After reading 2 stories, student have the choice to work on Scratch Jr. (a basic coding program) or Dream Box.
Word Work: students can choose to play roll a word, CVC word memory, CVC word puzzle, rhyme time, or a variety of other CVC/sight word based games. This week we will introduce some activities and word books that focus on the short Oo sound as well. Students will soon be making CVC words with short a, i, and o in the middle. Super readers and writers!
Work on Writing: Students will work on writing the letter Oo. They will circle their best work and be encouraged to discuss their work on Seesaw. We will also be introducing class journals in which students can choose a class journal to work in after they finish handwriting...some options include a sports journal, food journal, friends journal, vacation journal, toy journal
Listen To Reading: Students listen to the story, Katy's First Day of School, and draw, write, videotape, or record what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Students can choose a method (iPad drawing, video, physical drawing, etc) to show their understanding.
Math Journal Center or Game Center: Students can choose any page in their Unit 1-3 math journal to work on. Their goal is to finish 3 pages. They will be encouraged to take pictures and explain their work on Seesaw. Students can also choose to play a board game as well.
Math: Unit 4 (Partners, Problem Drawings, and Tens)
- 4.5: Practice with Teen Numbers and Partners
- Objectives: show teen numbers as a ten and extra ones; show teen numbers as 10 + a 1-digit number; identify sets of partners for numbers 2 through 6
- Vocabulary: teen equation, partner
- 4.6: Patterns with Shapes and Repeating Patterns
- Objectives: explore shapes and combine them to make new shapes; make repeating patterns with shapes, sounds, and actions; find sets of partners for 10
- Vocabulary: triangle, hexagon, trapezoid, parallelogram, pattern, alike, different, partner
- 4.7: Count, Match, and Compare with Math Drawings
- Objectives: explore addition and subtraction through buying and selling experiences; express addition and subtraction story problems in drawings and expressions; draw matching lines to see more and fewer
- Vocabulary: addition, subtraction, extra, less, more, fewer
- 4.8: More Teen Numbers and Equations
- Objectives: show teen numbers as a ten and extra ones; show teen numbers as 10 + a 1-digit number; identify sets of partners for numbers 2 through 6
