Caring For Our Community

I wanted to pass this on if you haven't read yet.  Thanks!

January is “Caring for our Community” month at Shirley Hills!

This year we are opening our “caring hearts” to children that live with Epilepsy. Epilepsy is more common than you think. More than 60,000 people in Minnesota have epilepsy - that's enough to overflow TCF Bank Stadium! Three million Americans have epilepsy and one in ten Americans will have a seizure in their lifetime. Money that we raise will go to support children that attend Camp Oz. For 28 years, Camp Oz has transformed the lives of thousands of kids with seizures. Combining the traditional camp experience with the security of 24/7 medical staff, campers enjoy swimming, horseback riding, and campfires, while gaining a better understanding of epilepsy.

This is a cause that is close to our hearts because one of our very own Shirley Hills students, Maddie Lewis is living with Epilepsy. During the month of January we will show Maddie our support, educate our school community about Epilepsy, and build community. Understanding what it is like to stand in someone else's shoes helps to build empathy in our hearts.
