September 10-14


We had a great first two days of Kindergarten and I can't wait to start our first full week.  We will start our first math and reading unit on Monday and  I can already tell that this class is very enthusiastic and passionate about learning!  Every week I will post an overview of the curriculum we are covering.  Here's a look at this week.

Reading:
  • Phonological Awareness: recognizing words in a sentence
  • High-Frequency Words: I
  • Introducing Ss and Mm
  • Summarizing stories
  • Making predictions before and while reading
  • Robust Vocabulary: ability, confident, reverse, complained, talent, encourage
  • Reading From Head To Toe By Eric Carle and Something Special by David McPhail
  • Working on conventions in writing
  • Writing names
Math:
  • Unit 1: 
    • 1.1: Introduce Numbers and Counting Routines
      • Objectives: Discuss links between math and the real world, Count objects in the classroom and in a counting book
    • 1.2: Relate Objects and Numbers Through 5
      • Objectives: Identify and order numbers 1-5, Count 1 through 5 objects, Identify numbers 1-5 from the number word
    • 1.3:  Draw Scenes of 2
      • Objectives: Develop the language to discuss numbers and number relationships, Draw 2 objects, Develop spatial concepts
    • 1.4: More Scenes
      • Objectives: Identify and order numbers 1-5, Count 1-5 objects, Identify numbers 1-5 from the number word
    • 1.5: Relate Shapes and Numbers Through 5
      • Objectives: Identify and order numbers 1-5, Count 1-5 objects, Identify numbers 1-5 from the number word, Draw 3 objects
Other News:
  • We will be doing fluency testing this week.  During this, I will meet with your child to work on letter recognition (uppercase and lowercase), letter sounds, number recognition, counting, pattern recognition, and sorting.  We will have a substitute teacher during this time and I will meet with each child in the hall.  
  • We have our first assembly on Monday where we'll talk about our Kindergarten hope and dreams and get to know the entire Shirley Hills staff.  It should be great!
