January 9-13

Welcome back everyone!  It feels great to be back at school and we're definitely ready to push forward and accomplish a lot of exciting stuff.  This week we will be starting two new things.  First, I will start forming guided reading groups and working with them twice a week.  This is a challenge that the Kindergarteners are ready for and will help start forming some rock star readers!  Secondly, we will be starting the medallion challenges (remember those green worksheets you got in your red folders at the beginning of school?).  I'll make a separate post reexplaining how the medallion challenge works.  The students will love this!

Now, here's the breakdown of our first full week of 2012.

Reading:
  • Letters: Bb and Kk
  • high-frequency word: for, me
  • working on recognizing and pulling out details and generating questions
  • Robust Vocabulary: fading, perhaps, prefer, warn, whirl, property
  • Reading What Will the Weather Be Like Today? By Paul Rogers and When a Storm Comes Up By Allan Fowler
  • Will be using iPads to find important details in the stories and determine the beginning, middle, and ending.
Math:
  • We started Chapter 6, which is all about the numbers 10-30
  • We're working hard on recognizing the numbers, writing the numbers, and using ten frames to make a variety of numbers
  • We'll also be using the iTouches to practice and reinforce all of these skills
    Social Studies:
    • Continuing group discussions regarding being good listeners, using different types of voices (and knowing when to use those voices), and what it means to be an active and helpful member in a community.
     A happy week to everyone!
